The next best thing

Wednesday 16 August 2017

New York City, NY -- You shoot a lot of pictures when you’re shooting dance. And it doesn’t matter whether it’s ballet, or modern dance, or ballroom dance -- every time, you have one frame that’s just perfect. It can be something subtle, like a hand or a foot. But there is always one where everything is just perfect.

Where even the rain is timed

Friday 12 August 2016

"At 10 minutes to 2:00 pm, I was alone backstage, wondering what was going on," writes New York-based photographer Timothy A. Clary. "Radio City’s summer Rockettes show 'New York Spectacular' was to start at 2:00 pm. I could hear the audience on the other side of the curtain, settling in. But with 10 minutes to go there were still no dancers."

"And then five minutes later, they came. Perfectly coiffed, dressed to a tee, the Rockettes dancers came up in the elevator and took up their positions on stage, and then the curtain lifted and it was non stop from then on."

Behind the glitter at the Met Gala

Wednesday 11 May 2016

"They call it the Oscars of the East Coast, otherwise known as the Met Gala, the Costume Institute Gala, or simply the Met Ball," writes AFP's New York City-based photographer Timothy A. Clary. "Basically it’s fancy and a big deal -- the red carpet event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art attracts A-list celebrities from the arts, fashion, music, film and high society. And my job, since I’m usually outnumbered by competitors, is not only to get the shots, but also to try and do something different to stand out from the crowd."

'Get behind the yellow line' - the Rockettes' orderly chaos

Monday 28 December 2015

The Rockettes’ Christmas Spectacular show at Radio City Music Hall is a cornerstone of New York City’s end of the year holiday season. Along with the famous dancers kicking up their legs in perfect unison, the extravaganza features dancing Santas, a nativity scene with real camels, fireworks and a Santa Claus flying through the clouds on a sleigh.

AFP’s New York-based photographer Timothy A. Clary has been photographing Rockettes’ rehearsals and tryouts since 2003 and this year decided to take a look behind the scenes.

“Their show is perfection,” he writes. “But backstage, it’s perfection with organized chaos. If you stand in the wrong place, you’ll get run over. I finally got to see what goes on behind the curtain.”
