Crazy in the North

Tuesday 2 April 2019

"There is a certain Nordic spirit that affects people living in Scandinavia, especially in its northernmost reaches. The crazier the idea, the less likely you’ll give up pursuing it," writes Olivier Morin, a Paris-based photographer who has done extensive work in the area.

"Take the ice surfboard as a case in point."

Mesmerized by orcas in the north

Wednesday 6 March 2019

When two of AFP’s most experienced photographers went to photograph orcas high above the Arctic Circle, they didn’t expect to fall in love. The setting wasn’t exactly welcoming -- air temperatures of minus 10-15 degrees Celsius, water temperatures barely above zero. On top of that, Mother Nature was not at all cooperative in Tromso, northern Norway. Not only did they have barely two hours of daylight in which to work every day, the skies were overcast and the normally clear waters of the fjords were murky because of all the sediment a storm had kicked up the week before.

Thursday 29 March 2018

"It’s an addiction. It’s not even that you want to come back. You need to come back," writes Olivier Morin, AFP's chief photo editor for France.

"And of course we’ll be ready during the presidential vote on Sunday."

Mermaid in the ice

Tuesday 28 March 2017

"The first time I saw her under the ice, I thought to myself, 'That’s the first mermaid I’ve ever seen,'" writes AFP's chief photo editor for France Olivier Morin. "She was exactly what you think a mermaid would be. Graceful. Deliberate in her movements. It was mesmerizing. Of course she didn’t notice. She pushed her tail and glided between the ice and the darkness. She was in a world of her own."
