Just another brick in the wall

Wednesday 24 July 2019

"I’ve wanted to do this story for a long time," writes Beijing-based photographer Fred Dufour.

"The Great Wall is such an icon of China, you can’t pass a posting here without doing something on it. And what better than repairs being done to the ancient structure that in some places is crumbling?"

They were like ghosts

Monday 16 October 2017

"Once, during the night, I was waiting for them on the beach, wanting to photograph them as they disembarked from the boats," writes Fred Dufour, a photographer based in China of his reporting trip to document the Rohingya refugees fleeing Myanmar for Bangladesh.

Out of the dark, one little boy walked toward me, attracted by the light of my phone. He stopped in front of me, no expression on his face, holding his head in his hands. He seemed completely lost, not sure what to do next."

Friday 31 March 2017

"As odd as it may sound, I love photographing the annual National People’s Congress, the gathering of China’s huge legislature in the heart of Beijing," writes photographer Fred Dufour.

"It not only gives me a chance to take pictures that to me capture the spirit  of the nation, it’s also one of the most unrestrictive places for a photographer to work in the People’s Republic."

A week in the life of Shanghai

Friday 16 September 2016

"When Shanghai city authorities invited a dozen foreign photojournalists to spend a week shooting life in the busy port and financial hub, I jumped at the chance," writes Beijing-based photographer Fred Dufour.

"Although it’s the world’s most populous city, with 24 million souls, Shanghai has retained the winding streets and trees that give it a more 'human' feeling than the capital Beijing where I’m based, and it’s been a long time that I’ve wanted to take a closer look."
