"I was OK with the idea of getting 'board to death' in my new beach life in Miami, Florida, like most of my colleagues had advised me. After seven years of covering war, Islamist insurgencies and natural disasters, no more life-threatening adventures, they all told me," writes Gianrigo Marletta, a video journalist who has just arrived in Miami after seven years of being based in Indonesia.

"So how did it happen that barely month after my arrival, here I was again, chasing lava spewing out of yet another angry volcano?"

A skeleton wrapped in skin

"The three-year-old skeleton wrapped in skin should otherwise have been a little girl," writes Gianrigo Marletta, a video journalist based in Indonesia, following a trip to remote Papua, largely off limits to Western journalists for decades.

"She was barely breathing, fighting for her life in a remote part of the jungle, as her parents helplessly looked on. I have seen plenty of extreme poverty in my seven years as a journalist in Indonesia. Never have I seen a child in such a state."
