When democracy stumbles

Saturday 9 January 2021

Washington - It was always going to be a big day in Washington. Both houses of Congress were to meet to certify President-elect Joe Biden's November victory - a normally ceremonial event which had taken on outsized significance in light of Donald Trump's unprecedented refusal to concede defeat. Ultimately, the day would go down in history for the storming of the US Capitol by a pro-Trump mob, its jaw-dropping scenes captured at close quarters by AFP's 17-strong team of reporters, photographers and videojournalists on the ground.

My invincible Indian summer

Thursday 10 January 2019

"Having been based in Hong Kong and India for Agence France-Presse for the past seven years, I have not felt cold in almost a decade (Winter Olympics’ coverage aside). But as I left India after four fantastic and intense years as South Asia video coordinator, in order to join our regional headquarters in Washington DC, it was high time to dust my mouldy pullovers and treasured memories," writes video journalist Agnes Bun.

Sam was struck by the children -- a soaking wet toddler all alone, a little girl terrified of a camera tripod, a small boy trying to save his mother. He couldn’t bear seeing such little lives shattered so utterly. Here they recount their stories.

First foray in Africa

Friday 14 July 2017

"I was barely out of the plane when an immigration officer offered to show me on his phone a video of foreigners being beheaded," writes Agnes Bun, a video journalist based in New Delhi. "His colleague next to him proposed to me. It’ll be a while before I forget my arrival in the Democratic Republic of Congo."

Loving or leaving Holi

Sunday 19 March 2017

"What's not to like about a festival where you get to throw powder and water on perfect strangers? It's a trip back into childhood, right?" writes New Delhi-based video journalist Agnes Bun.

"Well, not exactly. Not when you're a reporter covering the Holi festival in India.

"The truth is, I have been based in New Delhi for Agence France-Presse for the past two years, and I still have not made up my mind about whether I like it or hate it."
